What is the purpose of Fraternities and Sororities. (Fraternities preferred)?

I wanted to know the purpose of Fraternities, Benefits, Bad/Cons, things to look out for, and etc. Just as much details as you can give me. I'm soon moving to college and considering a Frat, but don't know which one to join and commit too. So any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance
